Uber uses psychological tricks through cleverly designed apps to make their drivers work longer hours and earn more money for the company, according to a recently released report by the New York Times.

Most Uber drivers don't have the traditional 9am-5pm schedule. They have free range to set their own pace while working. However, Uber software introduces earning targets and uses them as incentives when drivers try to log off. In the past, Uber has also experimented with video game techniques, graphics and non-payment rewards, which are used to encourage drivers to work longer and harder.

For example, Uber has utilized a tactic known as earning goals, which in their case, alerts drivers that they are very close to hitting a target when they try to log off the company's driving app. Uber uses psychological tricks through cleverly designed apps to make their drivers file work longer hours and earn more money for the company, according to a recently released report.

This means the company has a clever algorithm set up that sends drivers their next job before their current ride is over.

According to the Times, Uber exists in a type of legal and ethical purgatory because its drivers are independent contractors, who don't have most of the protections associated with employment.

In another example, some male managers have in the past adopted a female persona for texting drivers. They found drivers were more responsive and the uptake was higher when they did. Parker, who managed the Dallas office in andsaid his branch used the persona 'Laura', who would tell drivers: You should head over there,' according to the Times. Parker said the office has an 'overwhelmingly male driver population'.

Uber acknowledged that it had experimented with female personas to increase engagement with drivers. Drivers then started to about working 50 to 60 hours each week just to make a profit. And to avoid driver backlash, Uber softened the tone of its messages and limited the amount of messages drivers receive, according to the Times. Another concern the company had was that many new drivers stopped driving before completing the 25 rides that would earn them a signing bonus.

In order to combat that, Uber officials in some cities started to experiment with encouragement popups like: Psychologists have long known that encouragement toward a concrete goal can motivate people to complete a task. And to avoid driver backlash, Uber file softened the tone of its messages and limited the amount of messages drivers receive.

He told the Times that Uber wants 'people to decide for themselves if driving is right for them'. One Uber driver told the Times about an instance in which he tried to log off the app. But suddenly, former Uber driver, Josh Streeter, who drove in Tampa, Florida, received a message on the app that said: The text then explained: Are you sure you want to go offline?

Streeter said he was then given two options, 'go offline' or 'keep driving'.

He said sometimes he had to fight the urge to work more after glancing at his data. Kevin Werbach, a business professor who has written extensively on the subject, told the Times: Another Uber tactic is something called forward dispatch, which dispatches a new ride to a driver before the current one ends.

But it can also work against them by increasing the number of drivers on the road and defusing fare surges.
