Updated March 13, The South Australian Government is being urged to make a declaration now to allow retail trading in the Adelaide city centre on Easter Monday next month. The Government wants shops to be open in the city on public holidays apart from Christmas Day, Good Friday and the morning of Anzac Day. SA Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond said the Government should not wait to enact the legislation.

Without that they can't plan their rosters, their advertising, they can't plan for that event. With less than a month until Easter, they are still not in a position to know for sure that the shops are able to trade.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has been in the Mall to see the retail activity and crowds. They like shopping on public holidays and we'd like to see this happening all year around," Mr Weatherill said. As he spoke about the Government's legislation, opponents of planned penalty rate changes lingered in the background to reinforce their message against changing public holiday declarations.

Mr Weatherill said he was ready to meet the SA Business Coalition any time to discuss proposed pay rates for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. First posted March 12, More stories from South Australia.
